'Lyn' was a 2-4-2T locomotive produced by Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway. The locomotive was constructed in the US, dissasembled and provided to the railway in kit-form who then reconstructed it at their Pilton workshop. Named after the river Lyn, the locomotive was a crucial part of the line, operating until its closure in 1935, when it was subsequently scrapped. In recent years, a replica of the locomotive has been built by the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway trust and was first steamed in 2017. The locomotive is very faithful to the original but thanks to CAD work and modern engineering, it is much more efficient and simpler to maintain. |
