The fleet of 28 TUA wagons were built by Standard Wagon of Heywood, Lancashire in 1977 for TRL. They were leased to ICI who used them for the transport of caustic sofa from Mond Works, Cheshire. The wagons had a gross weight of 51 tonnes and featured Gloucester pedestal suspension, all were painted initially into ICI dark blue with orange solebars and prominent branding. The TUAs were largely used on Speedlink services to customers across the UK. They were repainted into different liveries as the wagons moved to different operators. By 1988, 12 were repurposed for use on china clay slurry trains between Burngullow and Aberdeen - these were painted into ECC blue livery.
