British Steel ordered 20 'Torpedo' molten iron wagons from Distington Engineering Company, with the first arriving in 1973. The sole purpose of these wagons is to carry 250 tons of molten iron at a temperature of 1480ºC at the steelworks in Scunthorpe. They can still be seen in use for this purpose today, typically running with remote-controlled diesel shunters. |
