The LNER Class J92 (originally LNER Class Z4) were long-lived 0-6-0 tank locomotives and the oldest tank engines in LNER service, managing to survive right through to BR ownership. Five were designed and ordered by Samuel Johnson as simple tank locomotives and were rebuilt by Bromley in 1881, which included the addition of half cabs. One example was rebuilt with a 3-ton crane in 1891 for use at Stratford Works, with two more converted later in 1893. The remaining locos were scrapped. The three survivors spent their working lives at Stratford Works and were withdrawn in the early 1950s. |
