The Class 801 'Azuma' is an electric multiple unit designed by Hitachi Rail for use by London North Eastern Railway. The units have been built since 2017 at the Newton Aycliffe Manufacturing Facility and have been used on East Coast Mainline Services since 2019. These units were ordered as part of the Interctiy Express Programme and are part of the Hitachi AT300 product family, which includes the closely related Class 800 and 802 units. The 42 built sets are split across two subclasses, covering 5-car and 9-car variations - these are all used exclusively on the London Kings Cross to Edinburgh route. These units feature a single 750hp V12 engine for emergency use only, to allow the unit to reach the nearest station if the powerlines fail, unlike the Class 800 units these are not used in tandem with overhead lines for general train power. |
