The SECR used its standard 9ft 6in wheelbase steel underframe to build a fleet of two-plank ballast wagons that were introduced in 1919. Some 120 were built over the next four years, the last being completed by the Southern Railway. These wagons were often seen in long rakes as they took ballast to wherever trackwork required attention. They were so useful that British Railways didn't withdraw the last examples until 1971! This made them some of the last pre-grouping vehicles in operation in the Southern Region CCE's mainland fleet. No examples were preserved, however the Bluebell Railway has reconstructed one using the same chassis from a 7-plank wagon. (Information provided via Rapido Trains UK) |
