Designed by William Stroudley, these useful and long-lived locomotives saw a lifespan of over 85 years across the LBSCR network, working a mixture of freight and secondary passenger duties. Although withdrawals started in 1908, thirty survived into BR service in 1948, with the last survivors allocated to shunting duties. Eight of the Class were rebuilt as 0-6-2T locomotives (classified E1/R) in the 1920s, and four were transferred to work on the Isle of Wight in 1932. One locomotive survives and is preserved on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. |
