The LMS built a total of 200 20-ton coke hopper wagons under diagram 1729. Further examples were built by a variety of private industries, with the total thought to be around 600. After nationalisation, British Rail inherited all of these wagons and pressed them into service right through until the early 1960s. The design was very functional, so BR built their own derviatives, totalling over 2,000. These differed slightly but generally used a similar design.
