The LNER Class A2/3 locomotives were a newly constructed class, fulfilling the requirement identified by Edward Thompson for standard express passenger locos with a 4-6-2 wheel arrangement. Fifteen locomotives were produced according to Thompson's original design, but following his retirement, the remaining fifteen locomotives that were planned were redesigned and ultimately emerged as the Peppercorn Class A2 instead. The design was similar to Thompson's A2/2, however the A2/3 featured an increased boiler pressure of 250psi, reduced cylinder diameter and the outside cylinders were set back behind the bogie. The class faced some delays in production but eventually emerged in 1946. They performed adequately in service but suffered from undue flexing of the frames and constant trouble from the outside pipe connections. The class were all eventually scrapped. |
