The Class 71 is a class of twenty-four locomotives built for the Southern Region of British Railways between 1958 and 1960, designed with both third rail electrical pickup and pantographs for use in yards where overhead catenary had been installed. After use throughout the 1960s on heavy freight and passenger duties ( such as the prestigious 'Night Ferry' and 'Golden Arrow' services ), the locomotives were superceded by the Electro-Diesel Class 73 locomotives, with ten Class 71s being converted to 'Electro Diesel' dual power Class 74s. Following a further ten years of use, all but one of the remaining Class 71s were scrapped, with E5001 surviving as part of the National Collection. |
