Distinctive and small in stature; the Y1 and Y3 classes were built in the 1920s/30s and featured a highly unusual design which included a gearing system and superheated vertical water-tube boiler. The Y1s featured a “one speed” gearbox, whilst the Y3s were “two speed” which enabled the latter to work at either shunting or trip-working speeds. The class had the advantage of being able to raise steam much faster than locomotives with conventional boilers. They were used at yards across the country and proved advantageous due to their low coal consumption and ability to be operated by one person.
