A leader in bus design, the BMMO reached its pinnacle when it introduced the CM5T coach in 1959, a turbocharged vehicle capable of 80mph. The CM5T was especially designed to provide the nation's first motorway express coach service (Birmingham to London) when the M1 opened on 2nd November 1959. Such was the success of this service, that Midland Red introduced a second motorway link on 1st September 1960, this time to run between Coventry and London. Coaches used on the new service did not have the onboard toilet, but in all other respects were like the CM5T, but with the bonus of three additional seats, 4800 (800 HHA) was the first of the CM5 variant.
