Built by BREL at Crewe between 1987 and 1990 this class of 50 was originally intended for Express Passenger work - the first fifteen being Intercity locos the remaining 35 were in mainline colours. However, with a change in requirements they have been seen pulling freight trains and also used by the Parcels sector. This particular example is shown in the Railfreight Distribution livery with the subsector markings denoting that it is suitable for mixed freight traffic. The prototype loco was allocated to Crewe Eletric TMD and could be seen across the West Coast Main Line. Several Class 90s have also ventured over to the ECML when needs have arised. Powered by a ringfield motor the model has a working pantograph that will allow control from an overhead catenary system as well we via the rail in the conventional manner
